Privacy Policy
The short version
- We collect no data. Ekko has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no server of its own.
- Your text stays on your Mac unless you choose an engine that runs somewhere else — and then it goes only to the place you chose.
- API keys stay in your macOS Keychain and are sent only to the provider they belong to.
- History is yours to control. Keep it, keep it for one session, or don't record it at all.
Who we are
Ekko is made by Virtux s.r.o., a company registered in the Czech Republic (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what happens to information when you use Ekko. Because Ekko sends nothing to us, we are not the controller of the text you translate — you decide where it goes.
What we collect
Nothing. Ekko does not send us your text, your translations, your settings, your usage, your device identifiers or your location. It contains no analytics, crash-reporting or advertising software, and it does not track you across apps or websites.
If you have turned on Share with App Developers in macOS, Apple may pass us anonymous crash reports and aggregate App Store statistics. That sharing is controlled by you in System Settings and governed by Apple’s privacy policy.
Where your text goes
Ekko asks on first launch which privacy tier you want, and you can change it at any time in Settings. The tier decides which engines can be used. Every result shows which engine produced it.
On-device only
Text is processed on your Mac by Apple Intelligence, Apple’s Translation framework, or a model you have downloaded to your Mac. In this tier Ekko cannot send your text over the network at all.
Local network
Text is sent to a model server you run and configure yourself, such as Ollama or LM Studio. It goes only to the address you entered. Neither we nor anyone else receives a copy.
Remote, with your own key
Text is sent to the AI provider you configured — for example Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter or another compatible service — using your own API key. That provider processes it under its own terms and privacy policy, which you accepted when you created your account with them. Ekko does not relay your text through any server of ours; the request goes directly from your Mac to the provider.
What Ekko stores on your Mac
Everything below is kept locally, inside Ekko’s sandboxed container. None of it is synced or uploaded by Ekko.
- Translation history — only if you allow it. Choose Keep history (saved until you delete it), This session only (held in memory, never written to disk) or Don’t record history (not kept at all). You can delete history from within the app.
- Styles, glossary terms and settings you create or change.
- API keys, stored in the macOS Keychain.
- Spending totals for remote providers, so the app can show costs and enforce the monthly limit you set.
- Network activity log — a list of the requests Ekko has made (time, destination, model, token count, cost). It contains no text, is kept in memory only and disappears when you quit.
- Downloaded models, if you install any.
Documents you open or drop into Ekko are read only with your permission, and only for the translation you asked for.
Model downloads
If you choose to install a local model, Ekko downloads it from Hugging Face. If you search for models, your search terms are sent to Hugging Face. These requests never contain the text you translate. As with any download, Hugging Face can see your IP address and which files were requested; its handling is described in the Hugging Face privacy policy.
Apple services
Apple Intelligence and Apple’s Translation framework run on your Mac. When macOS needs to download translation languages or model updates, that is handled by macOS under Apple’s privacy policy, not by Ekko.
Children
Ekko collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Your rights
If you are in the European Union or another region with data-protection law, you have rights to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. We hold none, so there is nothing for us to return or erase. Your data on your Mac is fully under your control: delete history in the app, remove keys in Settings, or delete the app and its container. For text sent to a remote provider, contact that provider to exercise your rights.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects how your text is handled, the app will say so before it takes effect.
